Leola R. Becker, 85, of Beaver Dam passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam surrounded by her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at St. Katharine Drexel Parish, 127 W. Maple Ave., Beaver Dam with Father Jose Gonzalez officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 13th, from 5 pm until 8 pm at the Koepsell Funeral Home in Beaver Dam and on Saturday, March 14, from 10 am until 11 am at the church. Interment will take place at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Juneau.

Leola was born on April 1, 1923, at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, the daughter of Howard and Mary (Ganz) Reynolds. She was married to James T. Illingworth of Racine, on June 27, 1944. He was killed in action in Germany during World War II. Leola then married John M. Becker, Sr., in Juneau on February 13, 1947. She graduated from Williams Bay High School in 1941, and University of Wisconsin – Stout in Menomonee with a B.S. degree in Home Economics Education in 1945. She taught school in Beloit, Hustisford, and Beaver Dam Vocational School. Later, she became Nutrition Director for the Dodge County Commission on Aging until her retirement.

Leola was active in many church, civic, and social organizations. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Juneau and Beaver Dam for over 60 years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Juneau, and St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Beaver Dam (formerly St. Patrick’s Catholic Church). She was a member of the Dodge County Retired Educators, Beaver Dam Women’s Club, Daughters of Isabella, AARP, St. Patrick’s Christian Women’s Society, Beaver Dam Arts Association, Church Women’s United, and the Dodge County Extension Homemakers. She served as a trustee at Immaculate Conception Church in Juneau for many years, and also as a volunteer and officer in many of the church’s organizations. She volunteered for Project Aware, teaching English to Spanish-speaking women. She traveled extensively throughout the United States and the world, including the 2000 Summer Olympic games. She enjoyed playing bridge with several clubs.

Leola was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a model of motherhood who selflessly gave to her family and everyone around her.

Leola is survived by her two sons, John (Jean) Becker, Jr., of Hartford, WI, and Anthony (fiancée Patricia Cook) of Cambria, WI; her five daughters, Susan (Patrick) Slattery of New Glarus, WI, Eileen (John) Werblow of Sun Prairie, WI, Joan (Tom) Lawinger of Platteville, WI, Patrice (Donald) Wedel of Beaver Dam, WI, and Teresa (Gil) Haack of Beaver Dam, WI; one son-in-law, David Pelle of New Jersey; 17 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Eugene (Betty) Reynolds; one brother-in-law, Eugene (Julienne) Becker; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Richards, Bernadine Budde, and Kate Puls; one cousin, Joyce Giannini; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Leola was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, James Illingworth, in November 1944; her second husband, John M. Becker, Sr., on April 14, 1969; and one daughter, Mary Ann Pelle, on August 15, 1989.
