Diane Lee Opgenorth, age 70, of Mayville, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.
A private family memorial service will take place on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. A visitation for Diane will be held at the Koepsell Funeral Home in Mayville on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Inurnment will take place at a later time.
Diane was born the daughter of Earl and Maddie (Falkman) Sternat on January 7, 1955. She was a 1973 graduate of Mayville High School. Diane was united in marriage to Terry Opgenorth on August 19, 1989.
Diane dedicated her life to nurturing others and ran an in-home day care for children in Mayville. She had a special quality that made every child feel special and helped shape them into the people they are today. Her patience, gentle heart, and kindness left a lasting mark on those who knew her and will never be forgotten.
For many years, Diane was the proud owner of The Backstreet Café, Pub, and Grill where she served the community of Mayville for many years. More recently, Diane was employed at TAB in Mayville.
Diane was a previous member of the Mayville Booster Club and even won the Katie Award for being an active and dedicated member of Mayville sports and the community.
In Diane’s earlier years, they would take the RV to Bristol Motor Speedway for NASCAR races as well as going up north with family to camp.
Diane was an avid sports lover, and sports were always on at her house. She loved not only cheering on the Brewers, Badgers, and Packers but her grandchildren as well. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Diane is survived by her husband Terry Opgenorth; her children: Tanya (Dean) Wells, Tracy (DJ) Legas, and Brock (Kelly) Cotter; eleven grandchildren: Cody (Miranda) Legas, Cole Legas, Aiden, Garret, and Carson Wells, Annaliese, Owen, Evie, Nora, Beckett, and Rosalee Cotter; two great-grandchildren: Lincoln and Briggs Legas; her siblings: Richard (Sandy) Sternat, Kathy Koepsell, Mary (Dave) Moser, and Jackie (Al) Zimmel; and her step-mother Mary Jane Sternat. Diane is further remembered and deeply missed by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Diane was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law James Koepsell.
Diane’s family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Mayville EMS, SSM St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, and SSM St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison for the support, care, and kindness shown to Diane.
