Alva Lillian Sarsfield, 98, of Beaver Dam, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam.
Alva was born in Waltham, Massachusetts on April 28, 1913, the daughter of James and Cora (Beckerton) Robinson. After high school graduation, she attended Burdett Business College in Boston and then worked as an executive secretary for the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. She then served her country during World War II in the U.S. Coast Guard as the Admiral’s Yeoman. It was during this time that she met her future husband, James Sarsfield, while he was serving in the U. S. Navy. After the war James found employment with Mercury Outboard in Fond du Lac, and he and Alva were married in 1946. They had two sons, Robert and William. In 1960 they moved to Grafton and upon Jim’s retirement in 1978 they moved to Ocala, Florida where they spent 27 happy years. Alva, known as ‘Mommaball’ to her family, was a very kind and happy lady. She always had a smile and loved to sing. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, crossword puzzles, and making crafts. She was a member of the Joy Lutheran Church in Ocala.
Alva is survived by her son, William (Pamela) of Beaver Dam and a nephew, Gary (Linda) Robinson, of Brewster, Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Robert in 1997, her husband James in 2005, and her brother Heman Robinson.
Alva’s family wishes to thank the staffs at Hillside Hospice and Hillside Manor for their compassionate care during her illness. They are also grateful to Sylvan Crossings of Hunter Ridge in Beaver Dam, for providing respectful care in assisted living for five years, with special thanks to Judy Gassner.
Memorials: Memorials in Alva’s name may be directed to the Dodge County Humane Society.
