James “Jim” Schabel, age 89, of LeRoy, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, February 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
A funeral service for James will take place on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Christian Life Fellowship in Mayville with Pastor Matt Lewandowski officiating. A visitation for James will be held at church on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, military honors will be conducted by the Mayville American Legion Post #69. Entombment will take place at the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum in Fond du Lac.
James was born to John and Margaret (Kahlhamer) Schabel on August 7, 1936, on his parent’s farm in LeRoy. He graduated from Mayville High School in 1955. After high school, James honorably served his country in the United States Army. He served from 1956-1960 and then was part of the Army Reserves for two years after.
On June 8, 1963, James was united in marriage to Mary Paul at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in LeRoy. James worked for over 30 years at Maysteel as an Arc Welder.
James loved the Lord and read his Bible faithfully. He was an active member of Christian Life Fellowship in Mayville where he also volunteered for the food pantry. James loved to garden and enjoyed growing vegetables to share with his neighbors and for the food pantry.
James is survived by his loving wife Mary; his children: Lorie Schabel and Ryan (Sheila Hobelsberger) Schabel; his two grandsons: Daniel Schabel and Travis Schabel; his sister-in-law: Janice Schabel; and his brother-in-law: Marvin Lee. James is further survived by other relatives and friends.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Theresa (Jim) Drake, Henry (Diane) Schabel, Robert Schabel, and Marjorie Lee.
