Janis Mary Hunt, 91, of Madison, and formerly of Sun Prairie, Fall River and Horicon, WI, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2024 under the care of Oakwood Preferred Hospice. A graveside service will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Horicon, on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Rodney Serbus officiating.
Janis was born January 7, 1933 to Alphonse and Lillian Krueger. She was raised and educated in Horicon where she met the love of her life Richard Hunt. Dick loved to tell the story of how he saw Janis working behind the soda counter of her uncle’s pharmacy and was immediately smitten.
They married on September 12, 1953 and raised four children. She was an accomplished homemaker and family caretaker; every guest was welcomed to her beautifully decorated home and treated to wonderful meals and homemade desserts. She made holidays magical, and birthdays were celebrated with love. She and Dick were happiest together, ‘bumming around’, hunting for hickory nuts and enjoying drives in nature. She was an avid bridge player, playing with the same group of ladies for more than 40 years. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, and collecting Rowe pottery.
She was an active member of Horicon’s St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church for more than 60 years, serving on the Fellowship Board and Alter Guild. She was a community volunteer for the local food pantry and the annual Bethesda Country Fair. After moving to Sun Prairie following her husband’s passing, she became a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Survivors include daughters, Rebecca Hunt (Jim Koch) of Middleton, Christine (Dan) O’Connell of Bristol and Amy Hunt of Madison; three grandsons, Rob Snyder, and Brice and Zachary O’Connell; sister-in-law Phyllis Hunt; sister Lois (Jim) Asmus; four nieces, Nancy, Lori, Cyndy, and Dawn; and three nephews David, Greg and Mike.
Janis was preceded in death by husband, son Kim, brother-in-law Bob, sisters-in-law Dorothy and Marian, and her parents.
We thank all the caregivers from Oakwood Hospice and Oakwood Rise Assisted Living who so compassionately cared for Janis and supported our family. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Oakwood Hospice through Oakwood Foundation.
