Jean Faye (Grulke) Nehls, 87 of Juneau passed away peacefully at her assisted living home in Tucson, AZ on Friday, July 12, 2024.
Jean was born on June 5, 1937 to Lester and Ruth (Owen) Grulke at Hartford Hospital. She attended Juneau High School and after graduation she went to Madison Business College. Her first job was with Stroud, Steffins and Stroud Law Office in Madison. Jean then moved back to Juneau and went to work at John Deere Horicon Works. She later worked at the Independent Newspaper and then moved on to work in several different offices at the Dodge County Court House. Jean retired from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Secretary after 12 1/2 years in 1996.
On June 25, 1960 Jean married her beloved husband Wayne Nehls at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Juneau. Wayne and Jean had 4 daughters, Julie, Renee, Lisa and Sally.
Jean enjoyed their yearly fishing trips up north, road trips all over the US, their cottage on Rock River, bowling, genealogy and collecting anything related to humming birds. She was a member of the Juneau Snow Marauders, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Juneau and Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Tucson.
Jean is survived by her daughters Renee Tank of Tucson, AZ and Sally (Robert) Mueller also of Tucson, AZ. Grandchildren Cassandra (Darrell) Mentch of Jefferson, Jennifer Coombs of Juneau, Riley (Heidi) Mueller of Coolidge, AZ and Kyle Mueller of Tucson, AZ. Great-grandchildren are Hunter, Maximus, Henry and Lilyana Mentch of Jefferson and Kaiden and Landon Coombs of Juneau.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Ruth Grulke, her adoring husband Wayne, daughters Lisa Kolb and Julie Nehls, son-in-law Jonathan Tank, in-laws Otto and Leona Nehls.
Visitation will be held on Saturday September 21, 2024 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Juneau from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. Rev. David Brandt will officiate. Interment will take place at the Juneau City Cemetery. Following the burial, a meal will be served in the church basement by St. John’s Ladies Aid.
The family of Jean Nehls would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to all the staff at Mom and Dad Place Assisted Living Home in Tucson, AZ for their genuine compassion, respectfulness, friendliness and dedication to Jean throughout her time in their care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church Improvement Fund or to the charity of one’s choice.
I miss seeing Jean when I visit the house. We enjoyed playing bingo with her and later sharing our chocolate prizes with her as she observed our game. She usually had a smile and greeting for us. I wish you peace and good memories.
