John Oliver Compton (92) of Kenosha, formerly Beaver Dam, went to his heavenly home to be with Jesus, his wife Marilyn, son Dana and many other loved ones on September 18, 2023.
John was born on January 27, 1931 in Rockford, Illinois. His parents were Albert “Bud” and Coline Compton. He attended school in Rockford and graduated from Iowa State with a degree in Animal Husbandry.
He married the love of his life, Marilyn (Platt) Compton on May 4, 1952 at St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Camanche, Iowa. They worked side by side all their married life, dairy farmed for 35 years, ran a restaurant for 5 years, owned and operated a group home for mentally disabled adult men for 25 years. John and Marilyn were very caring and hospitable and looked after many people throughout their lives.
Although John was an only child, he relished time with his family which included his 6 children, 22 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. His kids remember him as a hardworking, generous, compassionate, present and loving father. John was humble and content in all he did, whether it was waking up before sunrise to milk his cows or driving his “guys” from the group home around the rural roads of Wisconsin. He loved animals his whole life, he loved to farm, be out in nature, and was a model train enthusiast. He was a skilled artist and was a wealth of knowledge because of his years of reading from encyclopedias. He was quick witted, had a great sense of humor and was a talented storyteller. He was a true Wisconsin sports fan, loved cheering on the Packers, the Brewers and the Badgers. Above all, he loved his family.
In John’s own words: “NO TEARS PLEASE – I’ve looked forward to this ever since Mom passed. God has blessed my whole life, far beyond what I deserved and I am so grateful.”
John was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, son, Dana Compton, and his parents. He is survived by his daughters, Sally (Chris) Hudlik of White Bear Lake, MN, Kathleen (John) Stampfl of Kenosha, WI, Kristine (Gordon) Oosterhouse of Randolph, WI, Jennifer (Bruce) Seppi of Anchorage, AK and son, David (Gloria) Compton of Oregon, WI and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Lowell Cemetery on Monday, October 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity that was dear to John’s heart, St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota. https://www.stjo.org/
