John R. Cronin

November 21, 1924 - May 12, 2020

John R. Cronin, 95, of Portage and formerly of Beaver Dam passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at Divine Savior Healthcare in Portage.John was born the son of E. Raymond and Laura (Zinn) Cronin on November 21, 1924 in Milwaukee. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII where he was stationed in the Philippines. John was employed with WI Power & Light Co. for over 39 years. He was married to Mary G. Noerz. John was formerly a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Beaver Dam. John is survived by his daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Cronin of Madison; his grandsons: Colby Carr (fiancée, Ann Hershfeldt) of Denver, CO and Christopher Cronin of San Francisco, CA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 70 years, Mary in 2018; his son, Timothy in 2019; and three sisters: Lora Cronin, Kathleen Epting, and Marion Dries. A private graveside service will be held at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Beaver Dam. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date.

Grandpa, I second what Colby said so well. You were the best, the leader of the band. I wish I had had the sense to record you playing your dulcimer; you were magical at those moments. What I would give to hear you play that again. You were a paragon of patience with us all. Thank you for all you did for us & for the example you set. Much love & respect always.

Please accept my condolences for your father passing. I remember your family kindness to my parents when they moved to 788. I always enjoyed seeing them when I visited, often walking or sitting outside.

Peggy, so sorry for your loss and our deepest sympathy to you and your family. Your parents were the first to welcome us when we originally moved to Saddle Ridge.

Grandpa, you were the best man I even had the pleasure to know. I miss you more than I could ever explain in words. Your generosity, your caring, and your love made the lives of anyone who knew you that much better. You will be missed daily and you made me a better man for knowing you. I love you Grandpa!
