Maxine D. Caffrey, age 92, died Friday, April 29, 2016 at Charleston House Memory Care in Beaver Dam. There will be a memorial gathering at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Beaver Dam on Thursday, May 5, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m; the rosary will be recited at 2:30 p.m and a Mass of Christian Burial will follow beginning at 3:00 p.m. Inurnment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Beaver Dam. The former Maxine Delores Fanning was born on August 5, 1923 in Colon, Nebraska to the late Frank and Blanche (Davis) Fanning. On August 25, 1951, she was united in marriage with Stephen F. Caffrey in Colon, Nebraska; he preceded her in death in 2006. Maxine was educated in Omaha and attended Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. She was the first female to teach at Boys Town in Omaha and she also taught grade school in Grand Island where she particularly enjoyed teaching second grade. For over sixty years, she supported foster children in Kentown, Burma, and Pime. Maxine was always active in her Catholic faith and was currently a member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Beaver Dam. Maxine lived most of her life in Grand Island, Nebraska before retiring to Sun City West, Arizona. She enjoyed golf, and has a hole-in-one, bridge, reading, traveling, knitting and was an excellent cook and baker. Survivors include her daughter, Mary (Ken) Ostermann of Beaver Dam; her son, Michael (Veronique) Caffrey; six grandchildren, Nicholas, Tessa Marie, Isabelle, Matthieu, Emma, and Louise; her sister, Rita (Jim) Vanek of Tucson, AZ; a niece and two nephews, Colette (Josh) Baylson, James (JoEllen) Vanek, and Joe (Laura) Vanek; other relatives and friends. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a granddaughter, Katie Frances Ostermann; and her brother, Waldo Cripe.
