It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard Elliott Hedberg, born on March 21, 1943, and raised in Worcester, MA. He was a beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and cherished member of the Beaver Dam community. Richard left this world on December 20, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, humor, and kindness.
Richard’s journey brought him to Beaver Dam in 1975, following his time at Wayland Academy. In 1978, he embarked on a new chapter as an entrepreneur, leaving an indelible mark on the community he came to call home.
On June 24, 2001, Richard married Barbara Hedberg, marking the beginning of a new chapter filled with shared joys and triumphs. His previous marriage to Lynne Hedberg enriched his life with experiences and love that continued to shape his journey.
Richard took great pride in being a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Hedberg, and his son Todd and daughter-in-law Lisa Hedberg, and his beloved dog Walter. Richard also embraced the role of a beloved stepfather and grandfather, extending his love and care to an extended family who cherished him deeply.
Richard is survived by his brother Paul Hedberg and his wife Hope Hedberg. He is also survived by his nephew Eric and Erikka Hedberg. Unfortunately, Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Hilmer and Esther Hedberg, and his nephew Peder Hedberg.
One of Richard’s great joys was spending time in Florida, where he entertained friends and reveled in the warmth of the sunshine state. His love for the region reflected his appreciation for relaxation, good company, and the beauty of living “the good life.” He adored his friends at the dog park on Marco Island; they served as a bit of exercise, camaraderie, and excitement for him!
Richard was not only a loving family man and a person of diverse interests, but he was also dedicated to making a positive impact on the world. His philanthropic endeavors were a testament to his commitment to giving back to the community that had given him so much.
Friends and family can gather at Koepsell-Murray Funeral Home in Beaver Dam on Wednesday, December 27th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate Richard’s life will follow at the funeral home on December 27th at 3:30 p.m . Friends and family are invited to join in remembering a man who brought so much light into the lives of those around him.
As we mourn the loss of Richard Elliott Hedberg, let us also celebrate the joy, laughter, and love he shared with us during his time on this earth. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration, and may his spirit continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

I was so sad to see Dick’s obituary tonight. I know there really are no words to help ease the pain of losing him. I hope sharing one of my fondest memories will make you smile.
Dick gave me my first “real” job opportunity in Beaver Dam. I have a lot of great memories working with him and the Heritage crew. The employee Holiday weekend parties Dick hosted for us to enjoy in St Louis and Minocqua were one of a kind. So much fun! Dick was a very generous and kind man.
I’ll never forget the surprise of his rendition of a “”wedding ceremony” he came up with at the beginning of our St Louis holiday party for me and my soon to be husband. “Pastor Dick Hedberg” announced that he could not allow us to live “in sin” that weekend so insisted he wed us. He performed the “ceremony” complete with his script, vows, flowers etc. Such a fun weekend for us all. He made sure of that.
I pray you each find peace and comfort in all of the wonderful memories you have of him. Hold those memories close. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
