Daniel Steven Hankes, age 30, passed away Friday, February 10, 2023 of an apparent drug overdose.
Daniel was adopted by Jack and Debbie Hankes on March 17, 1999, at age 6, following a period of foster care with them. He had an outsized voice and a great laugh to go with his eccentric sense of humor. His passion was fishing, and if he could have figured out a way to monetize that he would have had heaven on earth.
He was preceded in death by his birth mother Jodi, his grandparents Louie and Jean Hankes, cousins David and Michael, and infant Eleanor Rae.
Dan is survived by his parents, Jack and Debbie Hankes, half-brother Ryan, and adoptive sisters Olivia Grace and Brianna Nicole. He is further survived by a family of about a 100 aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, at last count. Special friends John, Adam, and Marissa survive him as well.
A committal service is planned for 1:00 PM Friday, February 17, 2023 at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Beaver Dam, with Fr. Will Arnold and Celebrant John Leiting presiding. Following the service, friends and family will gather at Stooges Sports Bar, 112 N Spring St to do what we do best: Drink beer, and be friends and family. Memorials may be directed to St Katharine Drexel School or the Dodge County Food Pantry.

I will always remember when daniel showed me how to tie a fly for fishing. He was so happy that day. He was a big part of my early teen years. I hope he can rest easy up there with our lord.

My heart is breaking for you as you mourn the death of Daniel. I was at SKDS volunteering on Daniel and Ryan’s first day of school I remember how they loved each other. Later I became one of their teachers, and it was grace to see you walking together as family. No matter how hard life was, you walked with your children. Thank you for the love you pour into all your children. May the peace of Christ be with you and give you comfort and strength.
