Delores Schwoch, age 97 years, a 4th generation member of the pioneer Waddell family of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2008 in Dallas, Texas. She was born May 7, 1911, the daughter of William and Amanda (Zastrow) Waddell, and married Elmer Schwoch of Beaver Dam in 1931.
Her great-grandfather James Waddell emigrated from Scotland to New York City in 1829, learned carriage making, and followed the Erie Canal/Great Lakes route to Milwaukee, Wisconsin Territory in early 1848. He purchased land from the US Government and cleared/started a farm in the wilderness of Lowell Township.
Delores spent her first 47 years in Beaver Dam and Juneau, WI working at Weyenberg Shoe, Newton Wenz, as Deputy Register of Deeds for Dodge County, and raising her family. She and Elmer later owned and operated the Prairie Motel in Merrill, WI and still later moved to Appleton and Kimberly, WI where she was office manager for the W.A. Close clothing chain.
In 1976, they retired to the Hewitt-Waco, Texas area where she became known as the Rose Lady, sharing her roses with people who needed a bright spot in their day. She spent many years volunteering in tutoring children and adults in language and math skills, helping to get the Hillcrest Hospital Volunteer Hospice program off the ground, and volunteering at the Hewitt Public Library. She continued tutoring until age 92 and then retired again to Cedar Hill, Texas to be near her son.
She is survived by her daughter Sandra (Harry) Nodes of Davenport, Iowa and her son Reginald (Madeline) Schwoch of Duncanville, Texas. Delores’ legacy lives on through 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren in Texas, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her husband (1984), parents, two older brothers, and a younger sister.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2008 at the Koepsell Funeral Home, 109 N. Lincoln Ave., Beaver Dam, WI 53916, with Rev. Dr. Mark J. Molldrem officiating. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Beaver Dam, next to her husband.
