Donald Lee Schmucki, age 49, of Beaver Dam, died Friday December 16, 2011 from injuries sustained in an auto accident.

Visitations and a memorial service for Don will be at Murray Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Visitations are on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Father Michael Erwin will officiate the memorial service to celebrate Don”s life at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. A spring inurnment will take place at St. Peter”s Cemetery.

Don was born on September 22, 1962 in Beaver Dam to Jakob and Kathleen Schmucki. He graduated from St. Peter Grade School and was a 1980 graduate of Beaver Dam Senior High School. Don was well known in Beaver Dam. He had an art for storytelling that was unprecedented, could befriend anyone, and was fortunate enough to have had several very close life-long friends. Don spent the majority of his adult life in the fencing business and owned and operated his own business, Foxx Fence (now United Fence) for over 20 years. Don had many interests and his business was a big part of his life. He loved construction. From the smallest of his kids” school projects to overwhelmingly large fence jobs, Don could always see the right path to completion and would take the helm to guide others through to the end. Don was also the first to volunteer his time, skill, and equipment to family and friends for any project. Don was a true outdoorsman. He shared his love of camping, and hunting deer and ducks with his kids, Nicki (age 12) and Jack (age 8). He was the best cast-iron-pan-over-a-camp-fire cook known to man. Don never missed a deer hunting season with his buddies and would spend months beforehand clearing shooting lanes, building deer stands, and planning the hunt.

The biggest passion in Don”s life was his children. Nicki and Jack spent virtually every weekend with him. He involved them to the point where his passions became theirs. Don gave his kids” activities top priority. He attended every school function and sporting event possible. He was the mastermind behind all of their school and scout projects. Together they produced trophy/ribbon-winning derby/powder puff cars and rain-gutter boats several years in a row. Don was extremely proud of both Nicki and Jack. Just last month he beamed with pride when Nicki shot her first buck (an 8-pointer) on opening morning of the 2011 gun-deer season. To say that the kids will miss their dad is the understatement of the century. Don”s absence will be felt by everyone he touched throughout his life.

Don is survived by his children, Nicole and Jack Schmucki of Germantown; his parents, Jakob and Kathleen (Noll) Schmucki of Beaver Dam; his brothers and sisters: Lou Ann Schmucki of Beaver Dam, Nancy Uthke-Schmucki (Stephen) of Eyota, MN, Robert Schmucki (Andrea) of Snow Hill, MD, Michael Schmucki of San Francisco, CA, Peter Schmucki (Melissa Maher) of Beaver Dam, and Jakob Schmucki (Rebecca) of Beaver Dam; 14 nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; the mother of his children, Sandy Lundberg of Germantown; and many friends and relatives. Don was preceded in death by his grandparents.

A memorial fund will be established for Don”s children. Donations may be made in care of the family in lieu of flowers. Murray Funeral Home, 131 East Maple Street, Beaver Dam will be caring for the family. Although I hadn''t seen Don in many years, I knew him well from school days. Reading his obituary and other condolences I can see that he was the same man that I knew some 30 plus years atgo. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all who loved him. To borrow a line from a popular song from our high school days, "Only the good die young" (Billy Joel).

Dear Schmucki Family, I am so sorry to hear of the untimely passing of Don. I spent many weekends at the farm when I was in high school. Don was always a nice and funny guy. My heart goes out to all of you.

I am so sorry to hear of you loss and the tradegy therein. What a loss to care fore in this dark part of the year.
