Edwin E. Nehls, age 73, of Hustisford, died Sunday, October 1, 2006 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Barron County, Wisconsin.

Visitation for Ed will be on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Murray Funeral Home in Beaver Dam and on Thursday at the church in Hustisford from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Bethany Lutheran Church in Hustisford. Pastor Tim Bauer will officiate. Burial will be at St. John”s Cemetery in Rubicon.

Edwin Elmer Nehls was born on August 1, 1933 in the Town of Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin to the late Edwin T. and Berdina (Smith) Nehls. Following high school, he served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954. He was a Sergeant First Class and a Platoon Sergeant in King Company, 180th Regiment. During his two tours in Korea, Ed received a Purple Heart and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross on January 15, 1953. He was a life member of the Lowell VFW, he was a member of the Hustisford American Legion, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a life member of the Legion of Valor, a life member of the DAV and served as the Dodge County VFW Council Commander.

Ed began is law enforcement career in January 1955 as a traffic officer and later became a detective in the Sheriff”s Department. Ed, a one of a kind sheriff, was appointed under-sheriff and, in 1966, was appointed Sheriff of Dodge County by Gov. Knowles. He served as Sheriff for ten years and was re-elected to another term in 1986. In 1977, Ed was selected as the Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer in Wisconsin. He started Nehls Realty in 1974 and owned the business for 25 years. He retired in January of 2006 turning his business over to his son Tim. He then spent many hours volunteering at the Beaver Dam Community Hospital and the Dodge County Fair Association. Ed loved his family very much. Each year there were three events that everyone in his family could attend and enjoy as a family. The fishing trip to Canada, the hunting trip to Ladysmith and the Brewers game and tailgating. He was an accomplished chef and enjoyed many different types of food. He was a member of Bethany Church in Hustisford.

Ann (Ted) Peters of Rubicon
Allan (Paula) Aufdermauer of Neosho, and
Aric (Tricia) Aufdermauer of Iron Ridge
mother-in-law Beatrice Neu of Neosho
three sisters Audrey Naperella of Oshkosh
Anita Prokop of Chicago and
Betsy Dobbratz of Juneau
good friends Bob Hammand of Hustisford and Raymond Rienke of Fox Lake
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Thomas, a sister, Florence Wickert and a brother, Donald Nehls.

Memorials to Ed”s family are suggested so that they maybe distributed to his favorite charities.

Our favorite story will always be about Ed and the first-time baby sitter when Ed was staying with Nina and Terry.
