Elaine Marian Gunst Rex (nee Koepsell), age 83 of Horicon entered eternal life on Monday, March 11, 2024 at Meriter Unity Hospital, Madison surrounded by her loving family.
She was born January 21, 1941 in the Town of Herman to Gotthold and Verona (Gloede) Koepsell. She was baptized and confirmed at Hochheim Lutheran Church, Mayville. She graduated from Mayville High School in 1959 and began to work at Schellpfeffer Law Office. On August 26, 1961 she was united in marriage to Leland Gunst at Zum Kripplein Christi Lutheran Church, Iron Ridge. She and her husband farmed together in the Townships of Herman and Rubicon their entire married life. Elaine worked many years at Personalized Products in Hartford retiring in 2013. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was an active member of the Trinity Ladies Society. She also played the organ at church, starting at Zum Kripplein Christi when she was 16 years old and later playing at Trinity for over 50 years. Her husband Leland, preceded her in death on January 22, 2011. On July 28, 2012, she married Claude Rex. He preceded her in death on June 1, 2023.
Elaine is survived by her four children, Noreen (Larry) Dogs of Theresa, Curtis (friend Lisa Meyerhofer) Gunst of Hartford, Willis (Carla) Gunst of Pine River, Dennis (Nichole) Gunst of Hartford. Nine grandchildren, Daniel (Alyssa) Dogs, Sarah (Joshua) Bender, Michael (Katherine) Dogs, Katherine (Nicholas) Ertmer, Cody Gunst, Cathryn and Christopher Gunst, and Matthew and Elizabeth Gunst. Ten great grandchildren, William, Benjamin, Samuel, Sophia, Jackson, Frederick, Wilhelmina, Orie, Adeline, and Wesley and a set of twins on the way. One sister, Lorraine Hahn of Hartford, brother-in-law, Robert Schultz of West Bend, sisters-in-law, Dorothy Dorst of Mayville and LaVerne Schulz of Iron Ridge and step siblings, Gary Dummer and Connie (Mike) Thull, step sister-in-law, Carol Dummer. She is further survived by three step-children, Cynthia (William) Peterson, Curtis (Kay) Rex, and Craig (Diann) Rex, eleven step-grandchildren and sixteen step great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Leland and Claude; four sisters, Arlene (Marvin) Ohland, Marian (Ronald) Brandt, Edna Schultz, and Marlis Glamann. Brothers-in-law, Earl Hahn, James Dorst, and Kenneth Schulz, step brother, Duane Dummer and step sister-in-law Sharon Dummer.
Funeral Services for Elaine will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 11 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, W691 County Road S, Hartford with Pastor Jeffery Drake officiating. Family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, March 15 from 4-8 pm at Koepsell Funeral Home in Mayville and Saturday from 9:30 to 11 am at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church Improvement Fund.
