Emily E. Klomberg

Emily Klomberg passed into her Savior”s sweet embrace on January 30, 2009 at Clearview Nursing Home in Juneau at the age of 96.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at St. Stephen Ev. Lutheran Church, Horicon where Emily was a lifelong member. Rev. Daniel Seehafer will officiate. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Internment will take place at Oakhill Cemetery, Horicon immediately following the service, with a luncheon to follow.

Emily was born in Kriebich, Germany on May 14, 1912 to Adolf and Elisa Moser. Emily was raised in Switzerland, where her father worked as a herdsman. At age 16, she immigrated to Milwaukee, WI with her cousin, Herman, to care for elderly relatives. She met Edward Klomberg at a Milwaukee German Club dance. They married in 1930 and eventually settled in Horicon, WI, where they raised their children Gerald “Jerry” and Betty and founded Klomberg”s Bakery. With hard work and determination, Klomberg”s Bakery became both a regional success and a local fixture known for Ed”s beautifully decorated cakes and delicious pastries and sweet rolls. For many years, Emily raised her family and worked faithfully alongside Ed in the bakery. She managed the retail store, cooked for the employees daily and focused her motherly love and attention on many of the young people whom they employed. Some of those special relationships continue on to this day.

When Ed and Emily sold the bakery in 1965, Ed continued to work locally, while Emily ”retired” to a newly built ”dream home” on Karen Lane. She and Ed traveled periodically to her hometown in Switzerland and to visit Ed”s family in Germany, but Emily much preferred to spend time at home. Hers was a simple life filled with work, love, family and faith. She had a great love for her family and tirelessly invested herself in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She showed her love in many practical and precious ways; joining them on vacations, mending socks, attending school functions, tending a sick child when mom or dad had to work. Emily”s great grandchildren were a special source of joy and delight and she welcomed visits from Emma, Martha, Ciara, Alec, Caleb, Maddy, Lukkas, Trevon, Brennen, Anya and Marita. Even as she began to show signs of age, she took great care to remember birthdays and share their lives with frequent phone calls.

In addition to her family, Emily spent her ”retirement” years, caring for elderly friends, relatives and neighbors, making meals, running errands and visiting area nursing homes. During her lifetime Emily cultivated many special and enduring friendships. She especially enjoyed her conversations and connection with: Evelyn Schendel, Eunice Bradell, Jane Westimayer, Jeanne Dresen, Earl and Betty Kerhmeyer, Agnes (Pat) Nowak, Sister Leanardo, Irma Miller and John Schmitt.

Emily is survived by her two children: Dr. Gerald (Mary) Klomberg, Beaver Dam and Betty (Bob) Pfister Walber, Green Bay; six grandchildren: Kurt (Anne) Klomberg, Horicon, Nan (Tony) Gutierrez, Menasha, Peter (Stacey) Klomberg, Horicon, Heidi (Scott) Martin, Horicon, Matt Pfister, Green Bay, and Kristin (John) Jarmain, Horicon. Emily is further survived by a sister, Lisi Aelig, Thun, Switzerland and cousins in Switzerland and the U.S.

In addition to her husband, Edward, Emily was preceded in death by brothers and sisters in Europe, a grandson, Michael Pfister and great grandsons Jacob Scott Martin and Jerrad Gutierrez.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staffs of Marvin Manor and Clearview Nursing home for their loving care and support of Emily and the entire family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to St. Stephen Lutheran School in Horicon.
