Gary Mathis, a former resident left a message on September 22, 2007:

To the Children and Grandchildren of Chili John: Please accept my condolences on your recent loss. I am a former resident of Beaver Dam having lived there from 1946 until 3 days after I graduated from Wayland Academy in June of 1960. My Mom, Louise Mathis, called me on Thursday, 11/20/07 and told me she had received some clippings from the Daily Citizen sent by Phyllis Smith, another former resident, concerning the loss of another Beaver Dam legend. Chili John''s is one of my best memories of Beaver Dam. If I got all "A''s" on my report card, my Dad would give me a dollar and I would go to Chili John''s and get two hamburger''s, a bowl of chili and a glass of milk. Whenever I order a bowl of chili I compare it to how I remember Chili John''s tasted, and I have yet to find any that had that special ability to raise a sweat on your forehead without burning your mouth and throat. Dad used to say that John would use him to test his chili by watching his forehead, and I know Dad used to eat alot of it during those cold Wisconsin winter days when he worked for Coca-Cola. In 1985 I went back to Beaver Dam, for my 25th class reunion. I had a room at the Hotel Rogers and I walked up Front street, downtown, to see if Chili John"s was still open. John was working at the grill, and I told him that I was in town for my Wayland class reunion and how I used to come in when I got all "A''s" and asked him if he remembered me, and a big smile came over his face and he said " Your Dave''s boy" and he yelled back to Sophie, "hey look who''s here, Dave Mathis''s boy, Gary." After some reminiscing, I asked him how the chili was, and he said " Here, I''ll show you how the chili is." After savoring a couple of spoonfuls, I told him it was still the best I''d ever had. And it still is. Thank you for letting me share some of my memories of Chili John with you.

09.10.07 Hey John ~ Hope this goes the Express Route to Heaven. Last nite (Sun nite), when we heard about you leaving us for the Better Life, your Wake had already passed, so it''s GOOD that you & Fran & Mary & I had a Gab Fest only a few days ago in the BD Hospital Cafe ~ we only talked current stuff then, but that''s cool ~ will save the Major Reminiscing until your Family and & mine are all tucked inside the Pearly Gates. Till then, show my Papa Byron how to REALLY cook ~ flippin'' hamburgers in Heaven ~ kinda gives a new meaning to Cheeseburger in Paradise! See you later John. Love, Tony Spangler

Just wanted to pass along my thoughts and prayers to your family. I was honored to be able to see your father every day at the manor. His smile lite up the room and his zest for life made everyone smile. He will missed and thought of often. I will miss making his turkey and tomato sandwich, but will remember with a smile his appreciation and caring ways. God Bless, Always, Diana Manegold
