John James Campbell

November 5, 1946 - October 27, 2007

John J. “Jack” Campbell, age 89, formerly of Beaver Dam, died on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Beverly Living Center in Randolph. Another of the greatest generation passes.

Friends and family may gather for a visitation at St. Katharine Drexel Church, 127 West Maple Avenue, on Saturday, November 17, 2007 from 10:00 AM until the time of service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the church on Saturday at 11:00 AM with Fr. John Schreiter officiating. Burial will follow at St. Patrick”s Cemetery, Town of Beaver Dam. The John E. Miller, American Legion Post #146 will conduct military honors.

John James Campbell was born on November 5, 1917 in Highland Park, Michigan, to the late John and Agnes (Coyle) Campbell. He was a graduate of St. Benedicts High School and a 1941 graduate of Columbia College in Chicago. John served in the 4th Division, Third Army Heavy Weapons Battalion from 1943 until December 23, 1945. He served in the European theater and landed in Normandy at Utah Beach. Two episodes of his army experience while helping to liberate Luxembourg, are detailed in the book, “Milly”s Story: A Young Girl”s Memories of the Second World War” by the Luxembourgish author, Milly Thill. He and five of his comrades were billeted with the Thill family at Christmastime in 1944. On October 16, 1946, he was united in marriage with Ruth Butler in Beaver Dam. John was a sales representative for Marshal Field Educational until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of the St. Katharine Drexel Parish and sang in the St. Patrick Parish choir for many years.

John is survived by his three sons, James B. Campbell, of Denver, CO, Robert C. Campbell, of Tucson, AZ and John W. (Jolene Britton) Campbell, of Spokane, WA, his grandson, Nathan Campbell of Denver, CO, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth, in 1992, his four brothers, Gerald, Donald, Joseph and Francis, and his sister Kathleen Kammerer.

I have many fond memories of Jack and the Campbell family, going back to our days living on Third Street. He always had a joke to make us laugh!
