Joseph J. Hack, age 80, formerly of Beaver Dam, died Sunday, August 10, 2008 at his home in Park Falls, Wisconsin

There will be services in both Park Falls and Beaver Dam. In Park Falls, visitation will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow, beginning at 4:00 PM. In Beaver Dam, visitation will be held at the Murray Funeral Home on Friday, August 15, 2008 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Katharine Drexel Church, 511 South Spring Street, on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at St. Peter”s Cemetery in the Town of Beaver Dam, Dodge County, Wisconsin.

Joseph John Hack was born on February 24, 1928 in Rossbach, Germany to the late Otto and Anna (Berndobler) Hack. He came to the United States as a child and attended St. Peter”s Catholic Grade School in Beaver Dam. After 8th grade, he went out west and worked as a cowboy on various ranches. He was drafted into the United States Army and he was a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division. He served two years in Japan during the reconstruction and then he was stationed in Alaska. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Joe returned to Beaver Dam. He worked at MetalFab and as a welding instructor at Moraine Park Technical College in Beaver Dam. Joe also owned a mobile home park in Portage before moving to Park Falls in 1980. There he owned and operated Joe”s Place Tavern. In retirement, he worked for Price County as a transportation volunteer taking people to various appointments and he served on the Price County Commission on Aging. Joe was a member of the American Legion Post #182 in Park Falls and he was a member of the Aleutian Island Veterans. He was also a former member of the Beaver Dam Elks Lodge.

Joe is survived by three children, Cathleen (Gordon) Kimball of Fond du Lac, Patricia (Frank) O”Dwyer of Fox Point, and William (Caryn) Hack of Waupun, five grandchildren, Michael Nicholson of Milwaukee, Michelle (Adam) Rushing of Fond du Lac, Aislinn O”Dwyer and Daniel O”Dwyer, both of Fox Point, and Hope Hack of Fond du Lac, five great grandchildren, his aunt, Maria Hack of Colgate, his brother-in-law, Jim Reider of Beaver Dam, a special friend and Happy Dancers Club partner, Bernice Watland and her family, of Park Falls, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ann Reider.

The family suggests that memorials be made in Joseph J. Hack”s name to Flambeau Home Health & Hospice, 133 N. Lake Avenue, Phillips, WI 54555.

Dear Cathy, Patty, Billy, Aunt Beverly, and extended family, After our Sunday morning bicycle ride, we were saddened to hear Patty''s message of Uncle Joe''s passing. Growing up, I always remember Uncle Joe as being quiet, but having an understated sense of humor -- and always appearing to be thinking more than what he revealed through his words. He seemed somewhat mysterious, with that faint mustache to this lanky kid known as "Chrissy-Missing-Tooth" by Grandpa Dunn. My last memory of him was at my mother''s (his sister -- Ann (Hack) Reider) funeral, when he asked me if I was Chrissy. At that time, I was struck by how much he resembled his father -- Otto Hack. The resemblance was amazying! Uncle Joe lived a slightly unconventional, but interesting and full life. He will be missed.
