Larry was born in Portland, Indiana on March 7th, 1939, to John “Newton” and Carmela Hastings. He attended Jay County High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was a veteran of the Cuban Missile Crisis before retiring after 4 years.
Larry loved traveling to different baseball stadiums with his friends, hosting parties on the weekends at his trailer, and helping others whether they asked for it or not. As a father, he was known for bringing home “lost” animals including bull frogs, turtles, and to his wife’s dismay, a baby alligator he forgot to mention was living in the bathtub. As a lifeguard at Warner Beach, he rescued a bag of puppies thrown into the lake and adopted the family dog “Twink.” He encouraged his daughters to be in sports and was active in their lives. As a grandfather, he was known for always having a variety of ice cream available and special shopping trips to Walmart. Larry leaves behind two Tibetan Spaniels, Reba and Joey, who received an equal amount of ice cream as the grandchildren. He was well known in the bowling community as the Manager of Village Lanes in Monona, WI. He had a passion for bowling and even scored a perfect game of 300, with the ring to show for it. His final career was driving for Madison Metro for 32 years before retiring to spend more time with his family and friends. He especially loved spending his days with his wife Jan, whom he cherished deeply.
Larry is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janet “Jan” Hastings, his daughters he lovingly nicknamed by birth order, Annette (#1) Hastings, Kim (#2) Hastings, Sally (#3) Hastings, and Nancy (#4) Hastings-Frisch and his son-in-law Greg Frisch. His grandchildren: Cory Hastings, Amanda Jakups, Alyssa Frisch, and Racie Frisch, and great-grandchildren: Jonathan Hastings, Brianna Hastings, and Karson Jakups-Gross.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Carmela Hastings, and his grandson, Mark Jakups.
