Melody Sutherland, age 99, of Mason City, Iowa and formerly of Horicon, died on Friday, June 16, 2006 at IOOF Home in Mason City, Iowa.
Visitation for Melody Sutherland will be on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at the Murray Funeral Home in Horicon from 12:30 PM until the time of service. The funeral service will follow the visitation at the funeral home at 1:30 PM with Rev. Paul Hudson officiating. Burial will be in the Burnett Central Cemetery.
Melody Sutherland was born on September 27, 1906, in Burnett, to the late William H. Sutherland and Eva (Falkingham) Sutherland Green. Melody”s father was a carpenter for the railroad and died when she was 3 years old. In 1915 she moved with her mother to Hampton, Iowa. Melody graduated from Hampton High School in 1924 and then attended the Music Conservatory in St. Louis, Missouri. Melody taught music in the schools of Shreveport and Montgomery Louisiana. In 1933 Melody married Merle Clock of Geneva, Iowa. In 1943 she moved to Horicon and attended Milwaukee Business Institute. Melody began working at John Deere Van Brunt in Horicon in 1944. She retired in 1971, after 27 years of service with John Deere. Throughout her years in Horicon, she had been an active member of the Presbyterian Church, John Deere Girls Club and Eastern Star. She traveled extensively in the United States, Hawaii, and Canada. During her retirement years she either knit of crocketed may afgans for her friends and family. In 1998 she moved to Willow Point Assisted Living in Mason City, Iowa. She moved to the IOOF Home in Mason City in January of 2003.
Survivors include her half sisters, Lois Dougan of Mason City, IA, Bessie Meehan of Buffalo Lake, MN; her half brother, Marion (LaVon) Green of Denver CO; her step children, Lou Barker of Lewis Center, Ohio, Patricia Verink of Iowa Falls, IA, and Richard Clock of Atlanta, GA, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Melody is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert Green and her step son, Dewitt Clock.
The family suggests that memorials be made in Melody”s Sutherland”s name to the Presbyterian Church of Horicon.
