Heaven has gained a kind, wonderful, gentle soul. Richard “Dick” Hensler passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, surrounded by his loving family, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Dick was born October 23, 1948. The son of Frederick & Evelyn (Pickhardt) Hensler. He grew up on a farm outside of Lowell, WI. He attended and graduated from Lowell-Reeseville High School. He married Barbara (Kreitzman) Hensler in 1977. Dick’s love for family and friends was evident by the way he lived his life in service to others. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1967-1971, with two tours of duty during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the Reeseville Volunteer Fire department for 29 years and a member of the Lowell-Reeseville First Responders, Medical unit for 28 years. He was a proud lifetime member of the Lowell VFW Post 9392. Dick was active in his church, serving both on the church counsel and was the Sunday school superintendent, as well as teaching Sunday school. He also served on the Dodgeland School Board. He coached boy’s youth baseball and girls’ softball. He was a Cub Scout leader. He never missed his children’s school activities and was always in the audience or the stands rooting them on. Dick worked for many years at Caldwell Lumber Company in Reeseville, Faith Technologies Sun Prairie, and most recently for H & H Electric in Madison. Dick is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 42 years; son, Michael (Abby) Hensler of Brown Deer, son, Matthew (Therese) Hensler of Scottsdale AZ, daughter, Heather (LeRoy) Berndt of Oregon, WI, and son, Christopher Hensler of Fond du Lac. He has 10 grandchildren who were the light of his life, Isaac, Noah, Leo and Emmett Hensler of Brown Deer, Colin, Nellita, Natalie, and Evan Hensler of Scottsdale, AZ, and Aubrie and Dominic Berndt of Oregon, WI; his brother, Ronald (Charlotte) Hensler; brother’s in-law, Dale (Margie) Kreitzman, Rodney “Fritz” (Sandy) Kreitzman, and Travis (Kristi) Kreitzman; his mother-In-Law, Marion Kreitzman; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred & Evelyn Hensler. His smile was contagious and he could light up a room with his warm personality. He will be remembered for the wonderful person he was, always willing to help others, and being there when anyone needed a helping hand. He will be fondly remembered by those closest to him for his Dick/Dad Jokes. A special thank you to, VA Hospital and clinics, VA Drs. Natalie Callander, Christopher Fletcher, and Michael Brunner; Paul Hauri, NP who was always the go to guy with kind words and quick humor, and the team in the infusion clinic at the VA and SMS Hospice for all the wonderful care that Dick received in his journey through cancer. Their support, kindness and professionalism will always be remembered. He wanted to leave you with this…Be kind to one another and be there for each other. Live your life to its fullest. Make time for the ones who are important to you as you don’t know what tomorrow brings. Love unconditionally, and laugh often. This wonderful man will be missed deeply by so many. The memorial gathering will be at Koepsell-Murray Funeral Home in Beaver Dam on Friday, December 13, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. The funeral service will follow at the funeral home at 12:00 noon with Rev. Donald Steinberg officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Lowell VFW, following the service, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Richard Hensler’s name to Badger Honor Flight or to the Lowell VFW.
